article about the rejection of RKUHP and the revision of the KPK Law on
September 24, 2019
All students
in various regions in Indonesia held rallies rejecting the RKUHP and the
revision of the KPK Law (KPK Law), Tuesday (9/24/2019). The action was held
around the DPR building, Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jakarta and the DPRD building. This
demonstration was conducted by students relating to the continuation of a
number of controversial bills in the community, including the RKUHP and the
revision of the KPK Law.
The results
of the student action according to the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law
and Security, Wiranto, said President Joko Widodo had coordinated with the
House of Representatives to delay the ratification of five of the eight draft
laws.
"The
president only approved three bills, five of which were postponed. They were
the KPK bill, MD3 Act, and the Draft Law on Formation of Laws," Wiranto
said in his press statement, Tuesday (24) / 09).
Wiranto
ensured that five other bills would not be authorized during the 2014-2019 DPR
period.
"The
other draft laws concerning the draft laws on the Criminal Code, Land,
Correctional, Minerba, and Manpower are clearly not (passed)," he said.
Even though
the President said that it had been postponed, the actions still could not
accept because they wanted to be canceled, not just postponed. Besides that the
actions were said to be ridden by several parties, the Student asserted his
action was a form of unrest ridden by political interests.
The riots
began when police sprayed water cannons and fired tear gas. Mass vs. police
clashes broke out and lasted into the night. The chaotic action made the
students run apart.
As of
Wednesday (9/25/2019), more than 232 people had been victims of the
demonstrations that took place in various regions. These areas include Jakarta,
Bandung, South Sumatra, and South Sulawesi.
